The nearly ever-present fog was one of the very first things I ripped out the moment I had access to the Developer Tool Kit.
It's not the fog itself that was annoying... it was the frequency with which it appeared. Keep it rare, and the variety can enhance the game. Allow it to become common and it'll turn into a cause of player frustration and a point of reviewer ridicule.
